Prevention

Health professionals should question all women in the postpartum review, especially those that already had postpartum depression or previous depression, about mood changes, appetite, pleasure, sleep and feelings towards their babies.

  • This will help early detection of postpartum depression and therefore avoid important physical and mental damages on the baby's health that could happen from bonding difficulties and from mother-infant attachment (grade B recommendation).

  • There are strong evidences that counseling and postnatal intervention decrease depressive symptoms and depression (grade B recommendation).
