Treatment

Psychosocial therapy

The most significant psychosocial interventions in reducing symptomatology have two modalities that are more effective:

Interpersonal psychotherapy

It focuses its work on women’s depressive symptoms and their relationship with the world, as well as the disruption of interpersonal barrier.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

Its goal is to help the individual to resolve her behaviors and dysfunctional cognitions through learning and cognitive restructuring (CAMACHO et. Al, 2003).

Follow below the main therapies that integrate an approach to patients with postpartum depression (BRAZIL, 2012).

  • Individual psychotherapy: has demonstrated efficacy in the literature.

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy: its efficacy has been demonstrated with results similar to the pharmacological treatment, with short-term therapies (such as six sessions).

  • Group therapy: it appears to be effective in promoting better emotional and social support of other women with similar experiences, psychoeducation, the possibility of undoing irrational beliefs, community resources exploration, focus on communication and problem solving skills, involving her partner and their house members as workforces.

  • Family therapy: family and partner support is critical for treatment of postpartum depression, with faster recovery when there is this support.
