Initial Concepts

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of mental disorders, in its fourth edition and with revised text (DSM-IV-TR) does not distinguish between postpartum mood disorders from those that occur in other periods, except as a specifier "starting in the postpartum", which is used when the firsts symptoms occur within four weeks after birth (Cantilino, 2003).

PPD is a syndrome in which occur changes that affect the woman's quality of life (CAMACHO et al., 2006).

Some changes are:

  • Behavioral

  • Emotional

  • Physical

  • Cognitive

Postpartum depression is a generic term used in daily practice, but the correct term, or the best, is attributed to the Postpartum Mood Disorder or Puerperal Psychosis.
