Postpartum depression has an incidence of approximately 10% to 20% of cases (Beck, 2001; Chandran, Tharyan, MULIYIL & ABRAHAM, 2002; Hanna JARMAN & SAVAGE, 2004; RIGHETTI ET AL., 2003). It is estimated that among these diagnosed cases:

Several studies have shown differences when confronting different realities, such as a study showed an incidence of 3.6% in Germany and by 34.7% in South Africa.

  • Ten studies estimated the prevalence of PPD in Brazil. Rates were found to vary from 7.2% to 43%. This difference is attributed to the factors and criteria used for diagnosis.

  • Most studies used a screening scale widely found in PD research, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). These data are shown in the sidebar, where you view the prevalence of PD in Brazil. Click on the picture to enlarge it.
